Jet Sharing vs Empty Legs vs Fractional: Which Is Right for You?

"Affordable private aviation" is a crowded marketing category with three completely different products underneath it. Each one solves a different problem. Picking the wrong one usually means paying for flexibility you don't need — or losing flexibility you do.

    Jet sharing (cost-sharing)

Two or more travellers going the same route on the same day find each other, jointly charter a flight from a licensed operator, and split the invoice.

    • Best for: travellers with some date flexibility on popular routes.
    • Typical savings: 40–75% off solo charter.
    • Trade-off: you have to find a match, which means the platform is only as good as its network on your route.

    Empty legs

When a chartered jet drops off its passengers and has to fly back empty (or to its next pickup), the operator may sell that repositioning leg at a steep discount.

    • Best for: travellers with extreme schedule flexibility who can pivot to whatever route appears.
    • Typical savings: 50–75% off the published charter rate for that leg.
    • Trade-off: routes and dates are dictated by the original charter, not by you. Cancellations are common — if the original client moves their return, your empty leg disappears.

    Fractional ownership and jet cards

You pre-pay for hours on a fleet. No matching, no waiting — call and fly.

    • Best for: 50+ flight hours per year, predictable corporate use.
    • Typical cost: $200,000–$500,000+ per year all-in.
    • Trade-off: huge minimum spend, multi-year contracts, and you're paying for guaranteed availability whether you use it or not.

    Quick decision framework

    • Fly less than 25 hours/year and have some flexibility → jet sharing.
    • Fly less than 25 hours/year and have total flexibility → empty legs.
    • Fly 50+ hours/year on unpredictable schedules → fractional or a jet card.
    • Fly 200+ hours/year → look at whole or fractional ownership with a tax advisor.
